I have recently been playing around with adding more textured backgrounds to my illustrations. So I spent a day just creating some backgrounds the old fashion way. I used the covers of old books as the canvas and adding some paint and paper to create texture. It felt really good to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty. I need to take the time to do this more often.

When I got a request asking for fruit artwork by noon tomorrow. My response was let me see what I can pull together. When in fact, I didn’t have any fruit artwork, but I do now.

Here are a few of the designs I was able to whip up in one night. Of course, if I had more time I would of been able to do more, featuring a larger varieties of fruit but all in all I’m pretty happy with what I was able to do while burning the midnight oil. Hopefully my client is just as happy with my results.

Hurry up and draw some strawberries!! Who doesn't love strawberries?!

While I was in Denver attending the HOW Conference I had the opportunity to do some urban exploring and I couldn’t pass up the chance to stop at the iconic Rockmount Ranchwear, “THE” Western shirt store that created the pearl button snap shirt. I just  had to leave with their book. After arriving home and unpacking all of my goodies I prominently placed the book on my coffee table where I couldn’t resist flipping thru it on a daily basis. I just love all the embroidery details, gem stones and the seemingly unrelated icons that are made to feel western thru embroidery techniques and juxtapositions.

One Saturday as I flipped thru the book I was inspired to break out my pencils and sketchbook. I turned my Pandora station to Johnny Cash & Hank Williams Jr. with a bit of Carrie Underwood & Taylor Swift thrown in and started to get into my drawing grove. From that inspiration came my new Western Inspired Collection that I call Cowgirl Tales.

Here is a little preview and you can see the full collection on my website.

I been seeing people posting about the sketchbook projects for weeks now. It sounds like a really cool project and I’ve visited their site on several occasions and even added it to my shopping cart a few time but never followed thru, well that is until yesterday.  After seeing it for the umteenth time I decided to just do it rather then keep tourchering myself with weighting the pros and cons. I’ve been milling around with the idea for so long that it just became easier to commit and  stop worrying about if I have enough time to do it, and if I was going to be left out of something BIG that I would regret not doing later. So I’m in, I’m doing it! My sketchbook is paid for and is in route right now!!

My fondest childhood gift memory was receiving a wooden art box with cubbies – I spent hours organizing all of my art supplies in that box. Is it coincidental that Santa gave my daughter an Art Box as well? I think not!!
